The secret of good communication!

Communication has a lot to do with our attitude.

This thought struck me while pondering over the subject of effective communication with one of my teammates. It is essentially true that effective communication goes beyond the dynamics of language and talking well with people.

The essence of it lies in getting, What, How, and When to convey a message right. And this reflects the maturity of a person.

We often tend to focus only on factors like vocabulary, confidence, public speaking, and the accuracy of the language. But along with these factors, one also requires sensibility to analyze the situation and respond to it appropriately. Keeping the outcome in mind is the key to successful communication. It all goes well if we communicated in the best interest of the situation we get in.

The leaders who drive work well are the ones who can communicate with others with empathy. Putting oneself in other's shoes is the best way to rationalize other's viewpoints. Somebody could be in pain, urgency, despair, or confusion. Showing understanding towards what others are going through puts us in a good position to negotiate with them and win their hearts.

Expectations are another aspect that plays a key role in the success of communication. Aligning our thoughts to what people expect from us is another way to respond to them convincingly. In addition to our needs, we must also give room to what others expect from us in any situation. Whether it is at a personal or professional instance, whether we are talking to our boss or an infant at home, it matters to think about what they expect from us while striking a conversation with them. And how do we want to make them feel while fulfilling their request or passing a suggestion to them? It’s not about what we speak, it the way we speak that creates an impact. Emotions travel faster than words.

We are all different, and the beauty lies in accepting it. Understanding the perspective of others is another important aspect to succeed in communication. We all should imbibe the thought of respecting each other while communicating. Different opinions are needed to create great ideas. And what we can do together is always going to be more than what we could do alone. If we are not willing to listen to people, we will never be able to communicate effectively. A listener welcomes another listener. We all have stories to tell, as everyone sees the world through a different lens, time frame, and awareness. The difference is certainly going to be there. And there is a wealth of wisdom in that difference. By accommodating other's perspectives we will not only broaden our realm of understanding but also communicate well.

Improving communication is thus a journey. As we pick up the lessons of life, we widen our horizons of understanding. The more we mature, the better we communicate.
